Q. How would you describe your life in only 8 words?
A. Always hoping to improve on the day before.
Q. What is your motto or maxim?
A. I'm not really one for motivational sound-bites, but I try my best to be a person who adds to the world more than he subtracts from it.
Q. How would you describe perfect happiness?
A. A clear view of the ocean and the mountains from my window; a stack of annotated manuscript pages on the desk; a well-written paragraph on the computer screen; the sound of my family's laughter coming up the stairs as they gather for dinner; a newly strung guitar; a cold glass of rootbeer; a fine cup of coffee; a warm bed; safety.
Q. What’s your greatest fear?
A. Doing the wrong thing at the right time.
Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?
A. Cape Cod, MA.
Q. What are your most overused words or phrases?
A. Rather, suddenly, essentially, basically - i.e. words that sound like titles of Phil Collins albums.
Q. If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?
A. To slow and speed up the course of time at will. (I suppose that's more of a super power.)
Q. If you could be any person or thing, who or what would it be?
A. Bruce Springsteen in the years 1975 to 1978.
Q. Who is your favorite fictional hero?
A. Howard Roark
Q. Who is your favorite fictional villain?
A. The entire village in Shirley Jackson's 'The Lottery'.
Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?
A. Absent commas and/or apostrophes. Rudeness. And, for some reason I can't quite decipher: humans dressed as cats.
